3D Printing and Construction

More challenging economic times and rising inflation mean that more companies are trusting technology than ever before

Many industries have embraced technological advances like 3D printing; the construction sector is no exception. While previously the domain of smaller industries, there have been great strides to apply this technology to larger construction projects.

The 3D Printer in Construction

Addressing Skilled Labor Shortages

There has been a recent shortage of skilled labor in construction, which has placed a greater emphasis on technology. Advances in 3D printing have provided one such answer to these problems.

Versatility and Integration

This technology uses a 3D printer to construct via layered application of material. Its function can range from building modular components to entire buildings on its own. It works in tandem with BIM software and constructs directly from the modeling software, providing greater accuracy and flexibility with the ability to implement last-minute design changes almost immediately.

Types of 3D Printers in Construction

  • Arm Printing: This method uses a robotic arm to print at multiple angles, allowing for greater detailing and flexibility.

  • Gantry Printing: A framework set up around a gantry system is used to layer construction material vertically. The gantry allows for greater accuracy and scale and lowers overall costs.

Printing Methods

  • Extrusion: The application of construction material by nozzle and is useful for large-scale production work.

  • Spray: This method utilizes a spray nozzle to apply construction materials under pressure. It helps fill gaps in construction and building on pre-existing surfaces.

  • Powder Bonding: This method bonds the various raw materials during the application by melting powders with a laser or bonding them with a liquid adhesive agent.

Material Flexibility

The materials used in printing are also flexible, with concrete, geo polymer, fiber, sand, and even locally available and recycled materials being used to build. Because of this flexibility, 3D printing offers greater variety and more environmentally friendly choices in construction.

Benefits of 3D Printing

Efficiency and Waste Reduction

3D Printing brings speed and efficiency to the construction process. As only the necessary materials are used, less goes to waste. Full or partial construction automation can rapidly reduce construction time and is not subject to weather or work hour constraints.

Cost and Safety Improvements

This technology also reduces labor costs, enabling greater workplace flexibility, with less skilled labor required on-site. As less labor is needed in 3D printing, there’s also less human error and greater workplace safety.

Limitations of 3D Printing

Challenges and Costs

Utilizing 3D printing technology in construction is a relatively new phenomenon; however, it still has many limitations. Chief among them are the high skill ceiling required to operate such technology and the high upfront purchase cost.

Need for Regulation and Quality Control

There’s also a need for quality control and legislation in the 3D printing industry. Automated construction processes can’t be checked regularly by inspectors for compliance. Furthermore, legal frameworks by local governments regarding implementation and regulation are also not well established or defined, making it hard for the industry to set standards.
